Bimini Sands Helps Build the New Porgy Bay Park

Last Saturday, a crew from Bimini Sands teamed up with our colleagues on the Bimini Tourism Advisory Board (BTAB) to help establish a fantastic new park up in Porgy Bay, North Bimini.

Dozens of people from around Bimini joined in to clean up the park property, remove invasive Australian Pine trees, plant dozens of new trees and plants, and build playground equipment for Bimini's youth. By the end of the day, an incredible transformation had taken place and the community of North Bimini was left with a wonderful new playground and gathering place.

Bimini Sands is always looking for ways to help make Bimini better for both visitors, and those of us who live here, and we're extremely happy with the new Porgy Bay Park. Next time you're on Bimini, make sure you check it out!

Brady Barr & the National Geographic Channel Back at Bimini Sands!!!

Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr, the hit show from the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD, just wrapped up another hugely successful shoot here on Bimini!

The Dangerous Encounters team spent the last 5 days filming with the team from the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center. This is the Recreation Department's fourth time working with Brady Barr and his team, and the third time that this series has come to Bimini to film our exciting wildlife!

Bimini Spared from Hurricane Irene

The team at Bimini Sands is happy to report that little Bimini was essentially unaffected by Hurricane Irene. We've had some gusty winds and periodic rain for the last two days, but nothing even close to what some of the other islands of the Bahamas experienced.

All utilities on the island were also unaffected, and Bimini is very much open for business.

We're still learning the extent of the damage elsewhere in the Bahamas, and hoping that our neighbors to the east bounce back quickly and completely.

Bahamas Lobster Season is OPEN!!!

The much anticipated opening of the Bahamas lobster season is here!

During your next visit to Bimini, make sure you keep a few things in mind when you're out hunting for "bugs":

- The catch limit is 10 lobsters per boat, not per person.
- The use of SCUBA to harvest any marine resource is PROHIBITED.
- Lobster tail length should be no smaller than 5.5 inches.
- The use of traps, without a specific permit, is PROHIBITED.
- Catching any egg-bearing females is PROHIBITED.
- The use of bleach or any other noxious substances is PROHIBITED.
- While you can use either a pole-spear or Hawaiian sling to capture lobster, spearfishing is PROHIBITED within 200 yards from Bimini's shores.

The Open Season for Lobster in the Bahamas runs from August 1 - March 31, and is thus CLOSED from April 1 - July 31. During the Closed Season it is unlawful for any individual to take, capture, kill, offer for sale, or have in their possession any fresh or live lobster.

Your cooperation is vital to keeping the Bahamian reefs and banks healthy, for all of us to enjoy!.

LIONFISH BASH 2011 WRAP - UP !!!

We've just completed the first ever Bimini Sands Lionfish Bash, and it was INCREDIBLE!!!

The Bimini Sands Lionfish Bash was set up as a fun, family spearfishing tournament that was aimed at helping Bimini's marine ecosystem by removing as many invasive Lionfish as possible. Not only that, but it was a charity event as well, with all profits from the tournament and related activities going to the Jackson Memorial Paramedical Trust in honor of our friend Woody Beckham.

With 13 boats entered in the Lionfish Bash tournament, we were able to remove a total of 318 lionfish from Bimini's waters in one day!

There were prizes going to the teams with the most lionfish caught, as well as the contestants who snatched up the biggest lionfish, the smallest lionfish, and the biggest lionfish for a Jr. angler.

Our Jr. angler winner was Kaylee Fantis, from the boat Extra Expense, who caught a lionfish weighing 12.65 oz.

The winner of the prize for Smallest Lionfish Caught was Charles Slick, from the boat Bloody Bill, who was able to grab a lionfish weighing just 0.05 oz.

The angler who brought back the Biggest Lionfish Caught was Jim Barley, from South Bimini's SharkLab, who hauled in a huge 31.30 oz lionfish.

Prizes were then awarded for the Most Lionfish Caught, and the second-most Lionfish Caught.

Our 2nd Place prize went to the Mills Family on the boat Extra Expense, who brought back an incredible 110 lionfish!

And the Grand Prize winners of the first annual Bimini Sands Lionfish Bash was the team from the SharkLab, who brought back a whopping 153 lionfish!!!

We finished the tournament with a fantastic awards dinner down at the Bimini Twist restaurant, where the honoree of the Lionfish Bash, Woody Beckham, thanked all of the incredible donors and sponsors who helped make this event such a wonderful success. In addition to slaying over 300 of the harmfully invasive lionfish, we were also able to raise over $15,000 for the Woody Foundation and their charity of choice, the Jackson Memorial Paramedical Trust.

The Bahamas Bans Commercial Shark Fishing!!!

The Government of the Bahamas has made a landmark decision in declaring a complete ban on any and all commercial shark fishing in Bahamian waters. This new legislation essentially creates a "shark sanctuary" that extends for more than 240,000 square miles throughout this island nation.

The shark regulations that were signed include:
· A prohibition on possessing, fishing for or landing shark or shark parts.
· A prohibition on the sale of shark, shark parts or shark products within The Bahamas or within the Exclusive Fishery Zone of The Bahamas.
· A prohibition on export or import of shark, shark parts or shark products.
· A research permit allowance: A person who wishes to fish for, have in his possession or export any shark or shark parts for educational, scientific or research purposes, shall apply to the Minister for a permit.
· A catch and release allowance: A person who hooks or catches a shark while fishing recreationally, shall release the same into the sea unharmed.
· An incidental catch allowance: A person may keep a shark if it is incidentally caught and used only for artisanal purposes.

Sharks are a crucial part of the marine ecosystem, and are largely responsible for the healthy reefs and fish populations still found throughout the Bahamas. Shark related tourism also brings almost $80 million to the Bahamian economy each year.

Bimini Sands Activities Director, Katie Grudecki, donated several photos to the Bahamas National Trust for their shark campaign, and we're thrilled to hear that the work of several people paid off in creating this important new set of laws for the Bahamas.

We're less than a month away from the first annual Bimini Sands LIONFISH BASH, and we're going to have plenty of updates coming to the Bimini Sands Blog over the next couple of weeks.

Not only is the LIONFISH BASH going to be a fun and exciting tournament, but it's also being held to raise money for charity.

All profits from the tournament will be donated to
The Jackson Memorial Hospital Paramedical Trust.

Woody Beckham and his family are condo owners here at Bimini Sands. Woody is 22 years old and has always loved the Bahamas, spearfishing and just relaxing in paradise. Recently however, he was tragically injured
playing rugby and is now paralyzed from the chest down. Even though Woody understands there will be many challenges ahead, he still hopes to become a Marine Engineer and hopefully dive again one day.

All of us here at Bimini Sands would like to support Woody in his efforts
and all others facing challenges like his. Because of this, Bimini Sands has decided to donate all profits from this tournament to Woody’s charity of choice: The Jackson Memorial Hospital Paramedical Trust.

Bimini Pride Day - South Bimini Beach Clean-Up!

Saturday, May 21st, was the first ever Bimini Pride Day. The event was set to be an island-wide clean-up that tackled the litter and trash accumulated along the roadsides & beaches of Bimini.

Over 100 people participated on North Bimini, yet just a handful of people helped out on South Bimini. Bimini Sands & the SharkLab have lead and organized dozens of clean-up efforts around South Bimini over the years, and we were hoping to get help from other homeowners, business owners and residents for the Bimini Pride Day event.

A few Bimini residents that surely enjoyed our efforts were the three Common Nighthawk mothers that had laid eggs along South Bimini's gorgeous western beaches. Nighthawks are voracious predators of various insects, including mosquitoes, so we were very happy to help tidy up around their nests to ensure that the next generation of these birds starts chowing-down on mosquitoes as soon as possible.

Hopefully the next clean-up event will garner a bigger turn-out, but regardless, Bimini Sands is always happy to do our part in keeping Bimini clean and beautiful.

Coastal Awareness Clean-Up with Bimini Sands

April is Coastal Awareness Month, and as we do every year, Bimini Sands participated in another clean-up campaign on the island of Bimini. Teaming up with our friends at the SharkLab and a crew from the Bimini Tourism Office, we were able to remove several hundred pounds of trash and debris off of the beaches and roadsides of South Bimini.

Bimini Sands will be helping out with more clean-up efforts in the near future, and we have participated in dozens of them in past, and we always appreciate any help that our visitors and condo-owners can offer to keep Bimini the beautiful island paradise that it is.

Especially on an island as small as Bimini, if we all do a little, we can really do A LOT!!!

The Bahamas National Trust has teamed up with the PEW Environmental Group to launch a campaign to establish the Bahamas as a shark sanctuary. What that means is that the sharks of the Bahamas would be forever protected against the possibility of a commercial shark-fishing industry.

The sharks in the Bahamas are largely responsible for the beautiful reefs and healthy seagrass meadows, as well as the bountiful fish populations that inhabit them. Shark-based tourism also injects almost $80 million dollars into the Bahamian economy every year.

Bimini Sands took a very proactive step to become the first Shark-Free Marina, not only in the Bahamas, but in the entire world. We also have been offering our hugely popular, and educational, Shark Encounters for more than 4 years now.

Protecting the Sharks of the Bahamas

The Bahamas National Trust and the PEW Environmental Group have recently launched a campaign to establish the Bahamas as a shark sanctuary. Their goal is not to criminalize sport- or sustenance-fishing, but rather prevent a commercial shark fishery from being started in Bahamian waters. The Bahamas boasts some of the healthiest shark populations in the northern Atlantic, and the environmental and economic reasons to protect sharks here are vast.

Not only do sharks play an unrivaled role in preserving and maintaining the health of our marine ecosystems, but shark-based tourism in the Bahamas generates upwards of around $80 million dollars every year.

As part of this campaign to "Protect the Sharks of the Bahamas", the crew from the Bimini Sands Recreation Department teamed up with our friends at the SharkLab to distribute some fantastic, informative posters around Bimini yesterday.

The goal is to build local support for this protection effort, and judging by the response of the Biminites we spoke with, this campaign will be very successful. Every single Biminite our team spoke with was supportive of the idea of banning commercial shark fishing in the Bahamas!

Bimini Sands has been supporting shark conservation around Bimini for years, most notably by becoming the first Shark Free Marina, not only in the Bahamas, but in the entire world!

KiteBoarding Bash at the Bimini Beach Club!

The Bimini Beach Club just finished hosting our first ever Bahamian Bash kiteboarding convention, and what a great time it was for everyone involved!

Kiteboarding dealers and enthusiasts from around the globe joined the Bimini Kiteboarding team for 5 days of fun on Bimini, checking out the new line of 2011 boards and equipment from some of the top companies in the industry.

November usually brings some breezy days to the Bahamas, and the weather didn't disappoint the group that was eager to make the most of the windy weather.

Bimini Sands Helps "Make a Wish" Come True!

Back in 2009, Bimini Sands was honored to help the Make a Wish Foundation bring a special guest out to the islands of Bimini for an unforgettable experience.

Lizzie Sautter, along with her family, wanted to participate in some real-life shark research, and there is nowhere in the world better to do that than right here on South Bimini. Joining our friends at the SharkLab, the Sautter family was able to experience the thrill of working with one of the most exciting, and misunderstood animals on the planet.

International Coastal Cleanup Day on Bimini

September 25, 2010 was International Coastal Cleanup Day, and as we have done dozens of times in the past, a crew from Bimini Sands joined the effort to pick up trash along the beaches of Bimini.

Teams from the Ministry of Tourism, the SharkLab (BBFS), the entire Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity staff, and even the local kids from the Bimini Sands Kid's Club joined forces for a day of beach cleaning, as part of an internationally organized effort.

In just a few hours, the team on South Bimini removed over 600 pounds of debris from our beaches, and that is not including the totals from North Bimini.

Bimini Sands recognizes that all of us, local Bahamians and visiting guests, have a responsibility to take care of this island, and we encourage all our guests and employees to help us keep Bimini a beautiful, clean Island in the Stream.

Bonnie Helps Clean Bimini

Tropical Storm Bonnie blew through the Bahamas last weekend, and while the windy weather made some activities around Bimini a little hard to accomplish, it also gave the crew from the Bimini Sands another chance give back to the local community.

Over the last several years, Bimini Sands has joined the gang from South Bimini's famous SharkLab several times to participate in clean-up efforts around the island, and last Friday we did it again to pick up trash and litter along all the road-sides of South Bimini.

So while the winds of Tropical Storm Bonnie swept through, we were busy sweeping away the litter from our roads and bringing it to the dump.

All of us, visitors and residents, have a responsibility to keep Bimini clean. Whether its cleaning up the beaches, the reefs or the roadways, Bimini Sands has been at it for years. And we'll continue to work towards bringing Bimini a brighter, cleaner future.

Flamingo Visits the Beach Club!!!

The Beach Club on South Bimini gets lots of visitors every week, with the Bimini Twist restaurant, Mackey's Sand Bar, the Square Grouper Tiki Bar, the Island Sushi Bar, beautiful beaches, excellent snorkeling, and even KiteBoarding lessons available, there is truly something for everyone. And now it seems as if even the national bird of the Bahamas wants to get in on the fun!

For the last few days, a beautiful West Indian Flamingo has been spending its days hanging out on the flats near the Beach Club. And while they are much more common in the southern islands of the Bahamas, particularly Inagua, every few years a few individuals make a brief stop on Bimini as they migrate around the Caribbean.

So grab your camera and head on down to the Beach Club to see this rare, beautiful sight! We've got plenty of fun and food waiting for you, and the flamingo, to enjoy...

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Visits Bimini Sands!

Bimini Sands just wrapped up five days of filming with the National Geographic Channel's hit series Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr.

The crew came to Bimini to film some of the incredible shark species that these islands are famous for, and ended up with some great footage of Lemon sharks, Nurse sharks, & Tiger sharks that will appear on an upcoming episode of Dangerous Encounters.

Along with South Bimini's famous SharkLab, the crew from the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center helped the National Geographic team get the shots they needed. One member from the Recreation Center also joined the film crew recently for a week of filming sawfish on the west side of Andros.

Bimini Sands in Southern Boating Magazine!

The May issue of Southern Boating Magazine has dedicated itself to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. This "Bahamas 2010 Special Addition" has loads of great information about all the islands of the Bahamas, including two separate articles that mention the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina and Bimini Beach Club!

In their "Bahamas Update", Southern Boating explains "We recently found a pleasant surprise in the greatly refurbished Bimini Beach Club and Marina on the south end of South Bimini. If your goal is an exquisite white sand beach overlooking the most crystal-clear aqua ocean, the Beach Club is tops. If sipping frosted drinks at a poolside tiki bar is high on your list—that works, too. The elegant restaurant features the area’s only sushi bar."

Later in the issue, Southern Boating introduces its readers to the Shark-Free Marinas initiative, and correctly points out that "Bimini Sands Resort & Marina was the first in all of the Bahamas to sign onto the campaign," and also talks about other marinas that have followed suit.

Bimini Sands at the Bimini Career Fair

The school year is almost over and high-school seniors all over the US, and the Bahamas, are thinking about what to do after they graduate. Each year, Bimini hosts a Career Fair to help give students a better insight into the many jobs and careers available right here on Bimini, and Bimini Sands was once again asked to help showcase the different opportunities available in the tourism industry.

Representatives from the Recreation & Activity Center and the Beach Club Restaurant spent the afternoon talking with students and answering questions about what it takes to succeed in this industry. Katie and Grant, from the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center, even brought a Bimini Boa to the Career Fair to help highlight the numerous eco-tourism opportunities that Bimini has to offer.

Our crew from the Recreation & Activity Office were also asked to give a presentation at the Gateway Christian Academy on North Bimini before the Career Fair. Bimini Sands is proud to have one of the most popular, and diverse eco-tourism programs on all of Bimini, and we're always eager to try to motivate the youth of Bimini to get involved in this exciting industry.

Bimini Boa Research on the Bimini Nature Trail

With the opening of the Bimini Nature Trail back in 2008, the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina created one of the most talked-about new attractions around the Bahamas. Since then, the Bimini Nature Trail has welcomed hundreds of guests, numerous school groups from around the Bahamas, and several film and print teams. Now, the Bimini Nature Trail is poised to host our first scientific research crew.

Members of the Global Insular Conservation Society are developing a project aimed at investigating the famous, yet mysterious, Bimini Boa and they have decided to use the Bimini Nature Trail as one of their primary study sites. The Bimini Boa is a completely harmless snake that is found no where else in the world, and is even listed by some conservation groups as an endangered species. And while this beautiful reptile is becoming a more familiar part of Bimini's eco-attractions, there is still little known about its life-history.

Bimini Nature Trail in National Geographic TRAVELER Magazine!

The latest issue of National Geographic TRAVELER magazine features an article titled "Great Winter Escapes," and names the islands of Bimini among their list of 15 destinations that fit their ultimate winter vacation criteria, "inspired natural settings, authentic to the core, full of local flavor and strong tradition."

Describing Bimini as an island "poised for eco-tourism," Bimini Sands' very own Bimini Nature Trail gets an honorable mention in the article. Kayaking through the mangroves is another highlight named in the magazine, and the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center offers the best kayaking trips anywhere on the island. In fact, last year Bimini Sands was a finalist in the Bahamas prestigious Cacique Awards in the category of "Sustainable Tourism" for developing Bimini's first comprehensive eco-tourism program.

The Search For Atlantis Continues....

One of Bimini's most famous dive sites is the fabled Road to Atlantis, also known as the Bimini Road. Legend has it that the Lost Continent of Atlantis may actually be waiting to be discovered somewhere near the islands of Bimini, and over the years scores of researchers have visited the island to investigate this mystery.

According to news reports, a Florida based company is getting ready for a major undertaking in the continuation of the search for Atlantis. Check out the story here.

The National Geographic Channel's popular fishing show "HOOKED" has visited South Bimini twice within the last few months. Crews from Hoff Productions, the company that produces HOOKED, have filmed with both the famous Bimini Biological Field Station, as well as the staff of the Bimini Sands Recreation and Activity Department.

It's no secret that Bimini is THE place to come if you want to experience exciting fishing, and with two upcoming episodes of HOOKED to feature Bimini, the fast-approaching 2010 fishing and boating season is bound to be even more exciting than normal with anglers looking to bring home their own incredible fish stories.

Bimini Sands Halloween Party!!!

The Bimini Sands Resort & Marina is always trying to give back to community of Bimini, and especially to the children of this beautiful island. From our free Kid's Club activities for local children, to our Recreation Staff giving lectures and presentations in Bimini's classrooms, we're always looking for fun things that can involve the youth of Bimini. Our annual Halloween party is one of our favorite things though.

Hosted at the Bimini Sands Beach Club, we offer the best children's Halloween on the island. And this years Halloween party was our biggest ever!

Over 150 local children showed up this year to join us in the fun, with scavenger hunts, pumpkin decorating, costume contests and the scariest Haunted House in the Bahamas keeping everyone entertained, and sometimes even frightened. And did we mention the candy? In addition to all the other free fun-and-games, the Bimini Sands team made sure every kid in attendance got their fill of free Halloween candy.

Thank You to everyone who helped out with the party this year, and we're already thinking of ways to make next year's Halloween Party even better!!!

A few months back the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina signed on as the first "Shark Free Marina" in the world, and now the initiative to 'reduce worldwide shark mortality" has taken off to include more than 30 marinas in 4 different countries.

Bimini to be Featured on Sci-Fi Channel

Next Wednesday, October 14, the Sci-Fi Channel's hit show "Destination Truth" will air an episode filmed around the islands of Bimini.

The show's host, Joshua Gates, and his crew visited Bimini Sands a few months back and scoured the island and surrounding waters to investigate the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. Check out the Destination Truth website for more info, and tune in next Wednesday to see what they discovered!

The Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Department offers tons of opportunities for fun and adventure around Bimini. Whether it's our Shark Encounters, snorkeling trips, Bimini Nature Trail tours, kayaking expeditions, island tours or other possibilities, we've got something for everyone to enjoy.

For the younger adventure seekers, we even offer Kid's Club activities that both local Bahamian children and visiting guests can experience. This past weekend, our Kid's Club group took part in what can only fairly be described as "the best boat ride ever."

A group of about 15 children boarded the Bimini Sands pontoon tour boat for a fun and informative island tour with our Recreation Department staff. The children get to learn all about the history and environment of Bimini as we cruise around the islands, and there's always the possibility for exciting wildlife sightings... And there was plenty to see on this trip.

Anxious to see some animals, the group saw everything they could have asked for including sea turtles, stingrays, blacktip sharks, spotted eagle rays, a tiger shark and even a pod of bottlenose dolphins.

Sea Turtles Now Fully Protected in the Bahamas

Starting today, September 1 2009, all sea turtles in the Bahamas are now fully protected by law.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources has amended the Fisheries Regulations to "prohibit the harvesting, possession, purchasing and sale of marine turtles, inclusive of their parts and eggs."

All seven species of sea turtles that exist today are listed as "endangered", and five of those seven species are found throughout the Bahamas. The sea turtles that are found in the Bahamas are the Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback, and Olive Ridley.

Both Loggerheads and Hawksbill turtles even use the western beaches of Bimini for nesting.

In passing this amendment, the Bahamas has taken a significant step forward in promoting marine conservation and we applaud all who were involved in this effort.

Miss Universe Contestants Visit Bimini Sands

The islands of Bimini got even prettier this past Saturday, August 8th, when 20 contestants from this year's Miss Universe competition paid us a visit for the day.

The Miss Universe pageant is being held on Paradise Island, Bahamas this year and as a special treat for the contestants they broke into smaller groups to visit a few selected "Out Islands" for the day. And while we're sure all the contestants would have loved to visit Bimini, we were happy to welcome the contestants from Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Ghana, Great Britain, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden.

Not only did the girls get to see the islands aboard the Bimini Sands "Party Bus" and our comfortable pontoon tour boat, but they also spent the end of their day the same way every day should end around Bimini, and that's relaxing at the Bimini Beach Club and Mackey's Sand Bar on South Bimini.

Shark Free Marinas & Baby Sharks on National Geographic

In January of 2009, Bimini Sands became the first official Shark Free Marina in the Bahamas. In an effort to help keep the oceans clean and fish stocks thriving, we're asking that our guests strictly practice "Catch & Release" with all sharks hooked around Bimini. Our Recreation & Activities Directors, Grant & Katie, are actually former shark researchers and are always willing to discuss the importance of sharks to the Bahamas, and the oceans as a whole.

Now, after just a few short months, the Shark Free Marinas Initiative is steadily gaining momentum!

More and more marinas around the Bahamas are signing on every week, and the initiative is even spilling over to other countries around the globe.

Actress January Jones is Scared FOR Sharks

Ocean conservation group Oceana is starting to roll-out a new series of public-service-announcements, both print and video, to highlight the plight of the world's sharks. And if you're looking for information on sharks, what better place to come than Bimini?

A few months back, the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina welcomed actress January Jones and Oceana to the island for work on their upcoming video PSA's. January came to Bimini to work with the Bimini Biological Field Station in the hopes of getting some more hands-on experience with sharks. Now she's taken what she learned here, and is helping get that information to the public.

Broadcasting From Bimini Sands

Bimini Sands has hosted numerous film teams and production crews over the years, and most recently we welcomed the Bahamas' own ZNS Network for two days of live broadcasting from the resort.

In addition to broadcasting their regular evening news show, ZNS interviewed Bimini Sands owner Frank Cooney, facilities manager Emil Potier, and office manager Viveca Lubin.

Bimini Sands & Coastal Awareness Month

April is Coastal Awareness Month in the Bahamas. Every year during April, the Ministry of Tourism helps organize events and clean-up campaigns around the islands, in addition to making an extra effort to educate both locals and visitors about the importance of the Bahamian environment. This year, the team from Bimini Sands was asked to help out.

During the first week of April, a team from the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center teamed up with the SharkLab to give a series of presentations and lectures at all three of the schools on North Bimini. First was the Holy Name Catholic School, followed by two separate presentations at the Bimini All Ages School, and finally the Gateway Christian Academy.

The goal of these presentations was not only to provide information to the students, but also to motivate them to join us in the Beach Clean-Up on April 4. And it seemed to have worked. Both North and South Bimini had great turn-outs for the Beach Clean-Up, and after a few hours of hard work we were able to remove several hundred pounds of trash and debris from Bimini's western beaches.

So far, Coastal Awareness Month has been a great success, and we've still got 3 weeks left to go!

Beach Clean Up - April 4, 2009

April is Coastal Awareness month, and next Saturday Bimini is organizing an island-wide Beach Clean Up. A crew from Bimini Sands is helping organize the effort on South Bimini, while groups from various churches, schools, local businesses and others tackle the beaches on North Bimini. While there have been other clean-up efforts organized around Bimini in the past, this looks to be the biggest one yet!

Do you ever wonder what happens to that soda can that blows off your boat? Have you ever wondered what happens to your fishing line when its left tangled in the bottom? Or have you ever considered where the helium ballons let go at birthday parties end up?

Not surprisingly, they don't just disappear.

Soda cans can take up to 200 years to break down, and fishing line lasts much longer at upwards of 600 years. If no one picks it up, it stays there to pollute the ocean and destroy sea life for decades and decades. And those balloons let go into the sky?... Most of them land in the ocean where they often kill birds and turtles who mistakenly eat them, or they wash up on beaches miles away from where they were released.

The theme of this years Coastal Awareness Month is "I Care...Do You?" It's a question we should all ask ourselves not just this month, but all year. If we want the oceans to remain healthy, and the beaches to remain clean, we have to put some work into it. Bimini Sands is joining the effort next Saturday, and if you're around the island, feel free to join us for this important campaign.

"A Night of Laughter"

Last night, Sunday March 22, the Bimini Beach Club hosted a fantastic fund-raising comedy event to benefit Bimini's 1st Annual Homecoming celebration. Performers from around the Bahamas treated the capacity crowd to a night of laughter and helped make the fundraiser a success.

The Bimini Beach Club was packed with Biminites and tourists enjoying hilarious and entertaining performances from David Wallace (standing center in photo above), Wil Stubbs, Mavis Ellis-Saunders, and students from Bimini's Holy Name Catholic School.

The proceeds from last nights comedy show will go towards making Bimini's 1st Annual Homecoming an exciting new addition to the island's schedule of events. Make sure you're on Bimini April 10-11, 2009. Better yet, book your room or slip with Bimini Sands today!

As more and more people learn about all of the things that Bimini has to offer, more and more production teams are choosing Bimini Sands as their resort of choice during their time on the islands. Over the last several months, Bimini Sands has hosted an increasing number of video production teams and been featured in various film shoots.

Our most recent television appearance was on George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing on ESPN2. George has made many visits to Bimini Sands over the years, drawn by our comfortable accommodations, fantastic amenities, and the quickest access to Bimini's legendary fishing grounds.

Earlier this month, we hosted the ocean conservation organization Oceana while they filmed a public-service-announcement with celebrity spokesperson January Jones. Bimini's Manatee is Heading Home

Vacation time has finally come to an end for a large manatee that has spent the last several weeks around Bimini. First spotted back in November, this large male has been quite a spectacular site for people to see. Unfortunately, Bimini is not considered suitable habitat for manatees, so a decision was made to return this gentle sea cow back home.

Together a team from the Bahamas Department of Marine Resources, US Fish & Wildlife, the Miami SeaQuarium, the US Coast Guard, U.S. Geological Survey & the Dolphin Communication Project developed a plan to capture the manatee and return it to Florida for further evaluation.

Once in Florida, the team will be able to genetically test the manatee to determine exactly where it came from, and as long as it’s healthy, return it home.

Crew from Bimini Sands, Bimini Undersea, the Sharklab and even a passing fishing boat also joined the effort to safely capture and transport the manatee last Saturday. In fact, the manatee was found and captured right off the beach in front of Bimini Sands.

Bimini Marine Protected Area Declared

A few years back, Bimini was proposed as the highest-priority site in all of the Bahamas for a Marine Protected Area, and last night a team of esteemed dignitaries from Nassau visited North Bimini to declare that the MPA had officially been designated.

By establishing Bimini's MPA, the government of the Bahamas has taken a bold and highly encouraging step towards building a sustainable future for the islands of Bimini, and well beyond. As the only marine nursery habitat on the western Great Bahama Bank, Bimini's mangrove nurseries replenish thousands of square miles of the ocean. By securing this MPA, Bimini's marine ecosystem will forever have a foundation to grow from.

The benefits from Bimini's MPA should be widespread and long-lasting, hopefully including a sustained sport-fishing and eco-tourism industry, as well as sustenance for local Biminites and habitat for a wealth of native wildlife.

Bimini Sands is now a "Shark Free Marina"

Bimini Sands is excited to announce that we are officially the first marina in the Bahamas to join the Shark Free Marinas Initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to educate the public about the importance of sharks in our marine eco-systems and promote 'Catch & Release' practices to our guests.

We feel that the harvesting of sharks for photo images or souvenir jaws is not in the best interests of the Bahamian people or Bahamian tourism. By asking vessels not to arrive at our facilities with sharks, we hope to encourage responsible sport fishing, thereby ensuring a lasting and healthy population of sharks in Bahamian waters for future generations and contributing to the overall health of the Caribbean.

The decision to support this initiative is not based on sensationalistic media reports, but rather the best available science that proves that sharks play a critical role in balancing the health of the ocean and, in fact, pose very little threat to people.

Bimini Sands asks for your support in ensuring that the waters of the Bahamas stay healthy, clean & teeming with fish for generations to come.

Bimini Sands Featured on Upcoming ESPN2 Show!

The Bimini Sands Resort & Marina will be featured on an upcoming episode of ESPN2's hit show, George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing.

George and his crew have visited Bimini many times, drawn by the fantastic fishing and excellent accomodations. When talking about Bimini Sands, George recently noted, "Bimini Sands Resort & Marina is the place to be when visiting Bimini. The facility has everything from upscale accomodations to eco-tours."

The upcoming episode will feature George and contest winner from Idaho, whose prize was an exciting fishing trip with George Poveromo and a stay at Bimini Sands.

We've got a great holiday schedule lined up for this week including a free family movie by the pool, snorkeling trips, fantastic food and drink specials, and the best fireworks show on Bimini!

It all starts Wednesday night at the Bimini Beach Club on South Bimini.

Manatee In Bimini

For over a week now, a large manatee has been seen slowly patrolling the shallow waters around Bimini. First sighted near Radio Beach on North Bimini, the manatee has been making regular swims up into the Alice Town harbour, hanging out under the docks and creating quite a sight for both locals and visitors.

While manatees are not found in large populations in the Bahamas, there are some islands that report regular sightings of these gentle marine mammals. By most people's accounts, the last time a manatee was seen in Bimini was over a decade ago.

A team of workers from the Miami Seaquarium is already on site, trying to assess the health of the manatee and determine if it should be relocated to Florida. So far, the manatee looks healthy and is behaving fine.

The Cacique Awards are presented by the Ministry of Tourism each year to recognize those who "are exemplary in their field of work as it relates to tourism." This year, the Bimini Sands Recreation & Activity Center has been named one of the top finalists in the "Sustainable Tourism" category for their work developing the Bimini Nature Trail and other eco-tourism opportunities around Bimini.

ESPN2 at Bimini Sands

George Poveromo, from ESPN2's hit show "George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing" recently made another trip to the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina to film for an upcoming episode.

George and his crew have made several trips to Bimini in that past, drawn by the legendary fishing and fantastic accommodations. George Poveromo recently noted that, "Bimini Sands Resort & Marina is the place to be when visiting Bimini. The facility has everything from upscale accommodations to eco-tours."

Bimini Nature Trail Grand Opening

Over the past year we have been hard at work developing Bimini's first nature trail. The Bimini Nature Trail allows you to see and view the plants and wildlife of Bimini in their natural environment, a side most visitors never see. The Bimini Boa and other animals are available for handling on our guided tours. This is a one of a kind experience that the whole family can enjoy.

World Famous Bimini Shark Lab

Believe it or not, South Bimini is home to a world famous marine research lab, the Bimini Biological Field Station. Here on the island the organization is known simply as the Shark Lab (and its researchers are sometimes called "sharkies"). As you can guess from the nicknames, the lab focuses on the marine ecology of Bimini with an emphasis on shark research. The lab welcomes visitors and is just a short stroll away from Bimini Sands. Our Activities Directors, Grant and Katie, used to work at the Shark Lab and are always happy to discuss the ecological aspects of Bimini. Not to mention their extensive time on the island makes them the ultimate "insider guides" - so if you have questions about where to go, what to do - just ask Katie or Grant. Diving the Sapona ("the concrete ship")

The wreck of the Sapona is a popular snorkeling and diving spot for visitors to Bimini. It's also one of the de facto social gathering spots to anchor. It's located just a few miles south of the resort and is easy to get to. Normally you can expect to find a few other boats anchored nearby. The wreck has been in place since the 1920's!

Small Boat to Bimini

This is an interesting article written by Dave Kresge (author of the Bimini Guide book). In it he discusses the pros and cons of making the trip from the US to Bimini on his 17-foot boat.

We're not sure Dave has all his marbles intact but there's some excellent advice for boats of any size. You can view the full article here.

Last we spoke to Dave he was threatening to come over on his 13-foot skiff. The man just doesn't learn...
